The level of seriousness and corresponding sentence will be determined by several factors including the class and quantity of the drugs and the extent of the defendant’s involvement. Therefore sentences can range from a conditional discharge for a minor possession offence to a lengthy prison sentence for possession with intent to supply. Offences involving the importation, exportation, or production of any type of illegal substance is serious, and can result in a custodial sentence of more than 10 years.
